Ok, so I don’t even know how to start this post seeing as I’ve got a whole bunch of stuff I need to say! At least, before all the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place and you guys will understand why we just randomly up and went to Nicaragua.
A month and a half ago my dad casually announced at the kitchen table, “We are going to Nicaragua to see Carter.” Then went back to eating his lunch like it was no biggie, you know. All we were doing was going to Nicaragua for a week… ??????? Right, like, what ev’s! NOT!!!! Because in actuality it was a pretty big deal because as far as I could remember from Social Studies in school-Nicaragua wasn’t in North America.
Now you guys know how we found out we were going to Nicaragua, lets talk about why! I said my dad told us we were going to Nicaragua to visit Carter. He and eight other guys were invited by Mark and Brenda Bachert and Kyle and Allie Wilson to go down to Nicaragua for a year. The elders in the nine guys assemblies were encouraged to come down and visit. And my dad is an elder at home, so we got to go visit Carter in Nicaragua!!!
We weren’t excited or anything…?? We left our camper parked in a campground storage area and our truck parked at a Park N’ Go, which had a free shuttle to the airport! We flew to Nicaragua on the new air line Spirit. It was great! If you haven’t heard of them before they are an airline focused on saving money. You have to pay for everything… even your peanuts!? So we saved a lot of money flying with them! The only problem- their flight times. On the way there we left at 12:45, and on the way back we left at 2:30 or something like that. And if you have long legs the seats don’t have much leg room-which made me very thankful I had short legs!?
The next day… Actually it was the same day, Thursday, we went to Carter’s children’s meeting in his barrio. It was cool because the object lesson being taught in Spanish was one I had heard in English so I got the gist of it-even if I didn’t understand most of it!
The kids were super friendly and I’d say that Mom was a favourite among the kids!!! The kids say they don’t speak English but a lot of them know at least a little bit. So they were teaching Mom a few Spanish words to add to her quickly increasing vocabulary!
That night we went to Gospel meeting in one of the Christian’s houses. It was close enough to Mark and Brenda’s house that we walked!
That night all of the guys came over for supper after finishing with their own house meetings in a few different areas of Nicaragua.
Friday morning the guys all do a review with Mark and Kyle in their separate groups. (All of the nine guys separated into pairs, with one group of three. The pairs each have their own area that they evangelize in!)
Jared, Jonny, and Jordan(the “J crew”) made invitations for children’s meetings to hand out with a calendar in one of their neighbourhoods.
And us girls, along with Carter and Marguel, got to go with them!!! We went to an AMAZING pizza place for lunch and then handed out the calendars.
Waiting for someone to come to the door to give them the invitation and calendar!
Once we finished they treated us to juice in a bag! The juice was made out of fruits that we do not have in Canada or the States. The girls had orange juice, but Mom had granadilla and I had cacao. It was delicious!
The weekend we were there Dad gave four messages on Marriage. Friday night was one, Saturday afternoon was another two, and then on Sunday he gave the last. That night after meeting the Christians at the hall served us supper! It was the Nicaraguan staple-Guyopinto! It was rice and beans and tasted really good!
Saturday morning Kyle and Allie had us over for brunch. We had crepes!!!!!!!!!!! It was SOOOOOO delicious! Us girls went swimming with 2/3 of their kids. It was lots of fun! Muchas Gracias, Kyle y Allie!
We set up the pool, and had great fun playing in it! And when Elisa and Elena were put to bed and the adults went to meeting I babysat! Cassia, Lanaya, Matthew, and Micah didn’t break anything so that was Awesome.
On Sunday night Paul and Karley arrived! Paul was from a previous group of guys that had gone down to Nicaragua for a year. They were a lot of fun and it was awesome that they were there for a few of the days we were there!!!
On Monday and Wednesday mornings the guys have a bible study, but because we were there… well, because Dad was there he gave ministry on Monday, and on Wednesday it was the normal bible study.
One of the most used things at Mark and Brenda’s house-the hammock! It was sooo nice to sit with breeze blowing and just chill!
Mom went with Carter to visit a girl, Catherine, who had just gotten saved on Friday!!! Mom had never ridden a motorcycle in Nicaragua before so she had a blast zoomin’ all over Nicaragua with Carter!?
We rode in the back of the truck to the first night of gospel meetings that Amos and Austin were starting!
The meetings were on top of a hill, with a few rows of chairs set up on a croncrete slab. When a dog wandered past my feet in the middle of meeting and Mom excitedly disturbed meeting to get a photo of the scorpion that wandered past her feet, I knew I was in Nicaragua!?
That night was supper at Kyle and Allie’s- It was SO good!!! And I forget what was so funny…?
On Tuesday Dad went to someone’s house for lunch, and she had parrots!!! So Carter and Dad got to hold them!
Tuesday afternoon we went to Mark and Brenda’s lake house! The view was AMAZING!
For the first time in my life, I think, I drank coconut milk out of a real coconut!!!
The raft on lake was great fun!!! My dad soaked a few people…?
Paul and Karley!
For supper we had an El Salvadorian food called Popousas!
The volcano!!!(I don’t know what its called…?) It was amazing to feel the power of the volcano surging, and watch it flow, and the hardening lava on top sort of burst apart then melt!! Although it was a little bit scary because two years ago my parents visited this same volcano and at the time it was only smoking. Now it has got lava bubbling in it!!!!!!!!?
Wednesday morning bible study with guys. It was really interesting!
The guys were ALL AMAZING singers!!!
Wednesday night was youth night! We played a game, sang, had a message, then played soccer! It was amazing how talented all of the Nicaraguans were!???
Leaving to go home, back to the camper. Truthfully I could’ve stayed another few weeks, if I didn’t drown in my sweat first… It was SSSOOO hot!!! I don’t think I’ve ever experienced heat like that before! But it was so worth it!!!!
Thank-you SO much Mark and Brenda for your hospitality, the food, and great company!!! Thanks Matthew, Micah, Elisa, and Elena for playing with my sisters and I, we all had a great time with you guys! It was such a privilege to come down and see you guys work in sharing the gospel and being a witness to the Nicaraguans!
