For some strange reason every time I thought about writing up this post all I could think of to tell you guys was that we had done nothing. …But then I would remember and be like, “Hey, we actually did do something-we went to the Navy UDT-Seal Museum and to the Kennedy Space Center and we went on a hike…” and so on until I remembered that we actually did do a whole bunch of other things!? I called this Crazy Recuperating because we were catching up on sleep while spending time touring.
Our last day in Nicaragua I woke up at 6:30am and the next day I finally got to bed around 8:30am-after eating breakfast! Our days were thrown off a bit but once they got back on track the rest of the week rode on pretty smoothly. On Tuesday we left for a State Park and on the way we stopped at the Nave UDT-Seal Museum!
We can look pretty scary…
And even more heroic scariness!!! The museum was super interesting-there were a lot of videos of them on some of their past missions. It was amazing to be shown how smart and capable these guys are in doing their job!
Then they had an obstacle course that was 1/4 of the height that actual Seals would train on and we only did around seven or eight obstacles and the real seals have to do 32- all in 10 minutes!!! I figured out that Seals are fearless or something cause I was chicken and they have to climb four times as high!??
This was definitely the easiest one! The rest required way more coordination…?
We finally used our Christmas presents!!! The backpacks were wonderful, and so much easier than hauling a water bottle out every time you needed a drink. …Plus we look pretty cool!?
Our hike took us to a river that had these super cool crabs! One of their pincher things was ginormous and the other was this piddly little thing that they didn’t use. We also found a turtle about 50ft from the river that was just out for its afternoon stroll.?
We went fishing for an hour that night, but we didn’t catch any fish. Which was dumb because we could see all these fish jumping, the stupid fish!?
We built a campfire and threw in our package of colourful fire and low and behold- there was colourful fire!!!
On Thursday we went to the Kennedy Space Center! This ball thing was super cool!!!It weighed 6 tons(12000 pounds)!!!!!!!!!!!!! And was supported by the same water pressure as a garden water hose, but I could push it and it would change directions-it should be call the ‘Floating Ball of Mystery!’
We took the bus tour and saw wild pigs!!! We also saw all the cool NASA projects and buildings! This is the platform that carries the rocket out to the launch pad! It traveled at less than a mile an hour. I could not imagine having to drive that thing!
Each track is big enough to fit a four lane highway down, and the treads on the big huge platform thing takes up all of the space!
We touched a piece of the moon! Although the rock was worn smooth from the millions of people who had also touched the rock!?
The real actual Atlantis that has gone into space and then re-entered our atmosphere many times. We got to go on the shuttle experience ride and that was so much fun!!! The scariest part was waiting for the ride to begin. The computers hype it up so much-it makes your heart pound faster because you just aren’t sure exactly what it’s going to be like. Once it starts, it tilts you onto your back, then the engines ignite so you start to shake, which felt so funny! I started to laugh which was super difficult because my neck was tensed up from all the shaking-it was one of the weirdest, and funniest, things I’ve ever experienced!
All of us were just sitting around the table eating some French fries, when all of a sudden a black bird swooped down right in the middle of us and grabbed a few fries. I think that was the closest I’ve ever been to a wild bird.? Once we were finished all of our fries, we left one… And then Dad tried to catch the birds that swooped down to try and get the last fry. Sadly we weren’t very successful-but none of the birds stole our last French fry!!!?
Cassia is learning to knit and she completed her first baby hat!
St.Augustine was an amazing old city that was protected by Castillo de San Marcos (a fort) built way back in the 1600’s. The fort was built out of this really cool sea shell limestone that would just absorb the cannonballs that were fired at it. Then a very unfortunate person would have to go dig the cannonballs out of the walls so they could fire them back at the enemy!
The land around Castillo de San Marcos was completely cleared so that no one could sneak up on them. And then the fort was set up so that the way the canons fired, if one quit another could cover that area. The little canons were super accurate!!! They could hit a stripe on the lighthouse a mile and a half away! One of the coolest things about this fort though, was that it was never taken by force but five different flags flew from it!
While we were out touring one day we went to a plantation! The lady was spinning cotton and showing us how all of that kind of stuff worked. We saw where the slaves lived, the kitchen and we peeked inside the big house.
Lanaya built this robot car all by herself! Although she did have instructions to follow…? Now she is in the programming stage so that she can drive it all over the place!
Beautiful sunsets at the beach, along with my beautiful sister, Cassia!
It turns out we are quite the jewelry makers. We recently stayed at a couple’s house, and Caroline, our hostess, owns a little shop on Jekyll Island so we helped her out by making some bracelets for her shop.
Caroline taught us some short duets on the piano so we spent some time practicing throughout the few days we were there.
A cool old amphitheater that used to be used to put on shows for the rich and famous who lived on the island many many years ago.
Family photo on Driftwood beach!
On the last day Don took us for a quick spin in their convertible!
Last picture in their shop!
And then we were driving through some smoke on the way to our next campground so we kept our lungs healthy with some wet napkins!?
It’s impossible! We think five miles an hour is bad-and I think we can walk faster than two miles an hour!?
This is quite a long post… but that’s what happens when I don’t make a blog post until it has been about two weeks.? I had a great time at the Kennedy Space Center, and at the Castile de San Marcos! I also had an amazing time with Don and Caroline on Jekyll Island!
Is the pigeon on the speed limit sign real or fake?
It’s fake-but I bet the birds think it’s real, too!
You and your family are having an amazing lifetime experience. keep on enjoying it!
I will!?
I love reading your blog entries…..please, please, please tell me you’re going to put them all together in a chatbook or digital photo album when you’re all done! We had really hoped to get to the Navy Seal Museum last year but it was too far away from where we were staying. It’s on our bucket list. I’m afraid your gap year has inspired us to do a smaller version, possibly next year so expect some “picking your brain” conversations with you and your parents. Carmen
I don’t know about making a book about our trip after we are finished, but I think it would be SUPER awesome if you guys went on your own “gap year”!!!! Feel free to pick our brains!?
Great to get more details of your fascinating trip! You girls are growing up so quickly , & you all look so happy & healthy (including Dad & Mum!) I’m a bit worried as to how you are going to settle down when the trip ends ?. It has been a cold winter in Canada, Good time to enjoy warmer weather! Luv
Yeah, we have been enjoying the warm weather!
Loving your blog.
Awesome!
Enjoyed your chat so much. Recuperation?!!! it looked like you were pretty busy and not recuperating. Thanks for every detail. A. Selene and the 4 youngest joined us Tuesday night to Saturday so we loved being busy too. Love G&G
Well… There were a couple of days where we just relaxed in the camper before being busy-but we didn’t have pictures so I just left that out! That’s awesome that Aunty Selene and kids were able to join you guys!!!
Love the picture of Cassia on the beach! Great perspective. Keep posting
Yeah, that picture is one of my favorites, too!
Read the whole post it was so interesting and I sure enjoyed seeing you girls have a good time I look forward to all the stories
Ronda in LasVegas NV.
Kenna Rod and I are really enjoying your blog and sharing your journey. I can understand your excitement at crossing the border after so many months away. I used to feel that way when my family lived I in Connecticut and couldn’t wait to get back to Maine. Also enjoyed the changing of the guard in D.C. I do hope that some day you get to experience it at Buckingham Palace in London. We were right in the forecourt, thanks to some English friends. And guess what, there the guards spoke to us! Enjoy the last days as your head towards home. And oh yes, Rod and I love Timmy’s. The two we had here in Augusta closed. So bummed?. God’s Blessings! Hope you get to visit Maine again someday.
